VFX: Script to Screen

Call for Applications 2015

VFX: Script to Screen equips producers, directors and creatives with the tools to make artistic, budgetary and technical decisions in relation to VFX, and provides a “big picture” understanding of how VFX impacts on various aspects of prep, production and post.

Through the experience of a live VFX shoot, a fully immersive day in a VFX studio, case studies, lectures and one-to-one VFX Clinics, the programme will provide participants with a broad overview of managing projects with VFX elements at all budget levels. The programme will: 

-Identify different VFX requirements for diverse projects and budget levels

-Discuss budgeting and scheduling for VFX

-Identify the team you need to build for VFX projects

-Explore the scripting, planning, visual structure, storyboarding and pre-visualisation of a project

-Explore the requirements of shooting VFX and on-set VFX issues

-Enhance understanding of key VFX post-production processes

-Enhance understanding of the interaction between VFX, games, and transmedia content

VFX: Script to Screen aims to create a pool of flexible professionals, highly versed in VFX technology and terminology, and fully familiar with its development and production processes.

 Participant Profile

VFX: Script to Screen is aimed primarily at producers and directors who wish to gain the skills to produce and manage a VFX project from development to post-production.  Key creatives such as cinematographers, editors, post-production supervisors and production designers may also attend. Participants may apply with or without a project; the programme includes several scheduled VFX Clinics during which participants can discuss VFX elements and issues in their projects with VFX Supervisors and VFX Producers.

 Programme Details and Schedule

The programme takes place over two main residential modules:

Module 1: Pre-Production, Budgeting & Scheduling, Development & Production

Dublin, 3rd – 7th June 2015

This module focuses on the creative and practical development of a VFX project, including budget considerations.  Participants will:  identify VFX requirements; explore narrative and visual development in relation to VFX; identify roles and responsibilities and explore the interaction between key creatives on a VFX project; and discuss script breakdown, budgeting and scheduling for VFX.   This module includes a live VFX shoot with Director, VFX Supervisor and crew.  The module will include masterclasses and project-based VFX Clinics.

Module 2: Post Production

Dublin, TBC September 2015

This module enables participants to understand the VFX post production process and project management requirements, including budgeting, scheduling, understanding core VFX processes, understanding how the VFX studio works in terms of pipeline and workflow, VFX editing, and how VFX interacts with editorial.  The module includes an immersive day in a VFX studio, and further VFX Clinics for participants with projects.

Participants may avail of further Skype/email consultations after Module 2, and receive a full VFX breakdown on their scripts from course tutors.

Seminaari: Elokuva- ja TV-alan kautta kasvua koko Suomelle

Aalto-yliopiston elokuva- ja lavastustaiteen laitos ELO (Film School Helsinki) ja FAVEX – Finnish Film & Audiovisual Export järjestävät 25.3.2015 seminaarin, jonka aiheena on elokuva- ja TV-tuotantojen tarjoamat mahdollisuudet alueiden kehittämiselle ja taloudelliselle kasvulle. Tilaisuudessa esitellään European Audiovisual Observatoryn teettämän tutkimuksen tuloksia joita eri Euroopan maat ovat saavuttaneet tuotantokannustimien avulla. Tilaisuudessa puhuu muun muassa selvityksen laatinut Jonathan Olsberg.

Lapin elokuvakomissio (Lapin Elämystuotanto Oy) hakee elokuvakomissaaria vastaamaan audiovisuaalisen alan asiakkuuksista.

Lapin elokuvakomission tehtävänä on lisätä elokuva-, mainos- ja tv-tuotantojen Lappiin jättämää tuloa sekä niistä saatavia imagohyötyjä.

Elokuvakomissio edistää Lapin kilpailukykyä av-alalla ja tuo alueelle tuotantojen kautta työtä, tuloa ja näkyvyyttä. Elokuvakomissio etsii parhaat kumppanit ja neuvoo tuotantojen kanssa toimimisessa. Elokuvakomissio on elokuva-alalla vakiintunut julkinen palvelu, joka yhdistää potentiaaliset kuvauspaikat ja niitä etsivät tahot.

Lapin elokuvakomissio toimii osana Lapin yhteistä markkinointi- ja viestintätalo House of Laplandia.

Tehtävänkuvaus: Elokuvakomissaarina tärkein tehtäväsi on neuvoa elokuva-, TV- ja mainostuotantoja kaikissa Lapissa kuvaamiseen liittyvissä kysymyksissä ja varmistaa, että elokuvakomission palvelut vastaavat asiakkaidemme tarpeita. Lisäksi komissaarin tehtäviin kuuluvat erilaiset markkinoinnin tehtävät.

Edellytämme hakijalta vankkaa käytännön kokemusta elokuva-, TV- tai mainostuotannoista sekä suomen lisäksi vähintään hyvää englannin kielen taitoa. Arvostamme iloista palveluhenkisyyttä, yhteistyökykyä ja hyviä henkilökohtaisia viestintätaitoja. Cross Channel Film Lab launches new training programme for European filmmakers

The Cross Channel Film Lab launches a brand new training programme, designed to help filmmakers working with visual effects and Stereo 3D transform their projects using cutting-edge technology.

Supported by Creative Europe, CCFL Training will focus on the development of low to medium budget feature films utilising VFX and Stereo 3D technologies to enhance storytelling and reach new audiences.

A core programme will offer 24 filmmakers, each with early stage feature film projects, the chance to engage in a mix of residential workshops and online seminars, masterclasses and specialist consultancy, and learn more about the intersection of visual technology and screenwriting.

Running for six months from June to November 2015, the programme is being run in collaboration with Le Groupe Ouest, Creative England and Falmouth University.

A further 24 filmmakers will be offered the chance to participate in CCFL Training’s online programme.

“The Cross Channel Film Lab opens this world up to European filmmakers working at a lower budget, giving them an opportunity to explore how technical elements can have a compelling impact on a film’s narrative. It is a unique chance for film-makers to work with talented experts, and create some really exciting new films.”

“New doors can be opened with new technologies and small crews, in a way that wasn’t possible 5 years ago. Bringing together accessible technology and filmmakers ready to discover new possibilities opens the door for cinema to become a source of deep amazement again.”

The previous Cross Channel Film Lab (CCFL2) project brought together eleven partners from the UK and France. Working with a range of industry experts over three years, the project explored innovative and immersive images and storytelling in low to medium budget feature films.

The successful programme looked at using Stereo 3D as a narrative tool and showed how considering visual imaging at the writing and development stages of film projects can foster creativity, efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

To mark the completion of CCFL2, and to celebrate the launch of the new training programme, twin events will be held in London (2 February) and in Paris (3 February), exploring an alternative approach to independent low to medium budget cinema.

The events will also include a screening of test material from the feature film projects which participated in CCFL2, along with some rare Stereo 3D archive material.

From its foundation as a cross-disciplinary forum where filmmakers, scientific researchers, technicians, educational institutions and industry can share skills and knowledge, the Cross Channel Film Lab is now forming new partnerships across Europe.

CCFL aims to create a consortium of SMEs, research institutes and laboratories, universities and centres of creativity, to revitalise the processes of film production and development, and provide inspiration and education in the use of VFX and Stereo 3D at lower budgets.

By doing this, CCFL hopes to broaden the scope of independent cinema, enliven European screenwriting and expand the international audience for European cinema.

Korean production in Helsinki

Early February, Korean feature film A MAN AND A WOMAN will be filmed in Helsinki. The story tells of a romantic encounter between two Korean expats in Helsinki. In the lead role stars Do-yeon Youn, a beloved actress in Korea who won the Best Actress award in Cannes 2007 for her role in SECRET SUNSHINE. The director is Yoon-ki Lee, another festival darling who signs for his sixth feature. His previous feature COME RAIN, COME SHINE ran in the Official Competition at Berlinale. The production is a Korean-Finnish-Estonian co-production handled by Bom Film Productions, a Korean production company of high repute. All elements seem to be in place for this major production to become an arthouse hit.

The shoot will feature typical Helsinki backdrops such as Hietalahden Kauppahalli, Aleksanterinkatu, Esplanadi and the National Library. The rest of the shoot is taking place in Korea.

The film’s release is planned for spring 2015 and aims for a premiere on Sundance or Berlin. Let’s see then how Helsinki looks through Asian eyes…

OPEN CALL TO NORDIC FILMTALENTS

With the ambition of presenting the best Nordic filmtalents, SPOT is now accepting submissions to the film programme. If you happen to be one of these filmtalents, don’t hesitate to submit your film and get a chance at screening it at one of the most important audience and industry festivals for music, films and interactive media in Scandinavia.

You can submit your film to SPOT here, as well as read the festival’s entry requirements. The submission deadline is 23. February 12 pm.

The following four categories are accepting submissions:

SPOT The Film, the festival’s competition programme for Nordic fiction films with a running time of 20-60 minutes.

 SPOT The Documentary, the festival’s competition programme for Nordic documentaries with a running time of 20-60 minutes.

 SPOT The Music, a programme which screens music films out of competition from all over the world.

 SPOT The Video, a programme which screens music videos out of competition from all around the world.

(Nordic countries include: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Greenland, Faroe Islands, Åland Islands and Svalbard)

DocPoint Encounters 28.-29.1.

DocPoint (27.1.-1.2.) has steadily become one of the largest documentary film happenings in the Nordic countries. As always, there are many international guests attending. This year’s guest in focus is Anders Ostergaard.

The DocPoint Encounters’ section on Jan 28th-29th offers masterclasses and lectures to industry professionals. In the event we get to know the challenges and opportunities of domestic and international distribution, the Belgian way of producing, new films in the rough cut phase and international festivals. The seminar guests include Finnish and international top professionals of the film industry. Make sure to register before Jan 23rd.

The Finnish Film Affair is an initiative of the Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy showcasing Finnish films to international industry professionals.
